Researchers have already discovered that we can bolster our immunocompetence by using only positive beliefs and thoughts and by eliminating negative ones. That we can control our immunocompetence through a psycho-technique such as this should come as no surprise. For over twenty years, we have been able to control our arteries and lower blood pressure through a psycho-technique called biofeedback.

Positivism describes the psycho-technique now being used to bolster immunocompetence. It was largely developed out of the pioneering work of medical doctors such as oncologist Bernie Siegel, Herbert Benson and Dean Ornish, all of Harvard Medical School; oncologist O. Carl Simon ton M.D.; David T. Bums, M.D., of the University of Pennsylvania, psychiatrist Gerald Jampolsky, M.D., originator of attitudinal healing, and many more.

The sum total of their discoveries is that when we continue to carry fear, guilt, non-forgiveness, resentment, envy, hostility and worry—and when we continue to judge and condemn others—these negative emotions are transformed into pathological changes such as cancer, ulcers, heart disease or infections.

At this stage, we should mention that psychology has long known that every feeling must first be triggered by a thought. A thought incidentally, is the same thing as creating a mental image or making a mental picture in your mind’s eye. Think a thought, or make a mental picture, of a friend or neighbor who has a more exciting spouse, a better job, a bigger house and a more luxurious car than you do, and you’ve set yourself up for a strong feeling of envy with possible overtones of resentment Within a minute or two, these negative emotions will start low-grade stress mechanisms simmering and you will begin to feel tense, uncomfortable and upset.

It’s not easy to change a negative emotion such as this once it’s begun. But it would have been extremely easy to have slid that first thought off your mind when you started comparing yourself with someone else.

If negative thoughts can produce negative emotions which can be transformed into physiological diseases such as cancer, hypertension and viral infections, then it follows that if we think positive thoughts, we can turn on positive emotions that will bolster out immunocompetence to the point where it can overcome tumors and swiftly produce armies of antibodies to annihilate a vital infection.

Assuming that a cold sufferer has a satisfactory intake of all other essential nutrients—especially vitamins A and E, the B-complex and zinc—what is the optimal amount of vitamin C to take? Let us begin by defining this as “holistic vitamin C therapy” implying a therapy in which all other vitamins and minerals play a supportive role in the healing properties of vitamin C.

Based on this concept, many nutritionists today are recommending that, as a prophylactic measure during the cold season, 250 mg should be taken with each major meal, or a total of three 250 mg tablets per day.

On the first appearance of cold symptoms, the consensus is to begin by taking one gram of vitamin C. After that, continue taking 500 mg every two-and-a-half hours throughout the time you arc awake. On retiring, take a one gram (1,000 mg) timed-release capsule of vitamin C. If you wake in the middle of the night, take another. Resume the 500 mg per two-and-a-half-hour-routine immediately on waking in the morning.

If timed-release one-gram capsules are not available, take an extra 500 mg tablet on retiring provided you have not taken any vitamin C dosage within the previous hour. If you wake in the middle of the night, take 750 mg of vitamin C on rising, then resume the 500 mg every two-and-a-half hour-routine.

For vitamin C to be effective, you must maintain a surplus in the bloodstream at ail times. Because the kidneys strain out all superfluous vitamin C from the bloodstream in about three hours, many nutritionists recommend replenishing the supply every two-and-a-half to three hours. In this way, you can maintain an above-average vitamin C level in your bloodstream throughout most of the twenty-four hours.

If you have not been taking the 750 mg daily prophylactic dose of vitamin C, and should a cold appear, start off by taking one gram of vitamin C. Two and a half hours later, take another one gram dose. Then continue taking 500 mg every two-and-a-half hours as in the program just described.

Whether or not you have been taking the 750 mg prophylactic dose, the important thing is to commence the 500 mg per two-and-a-half-hour routine as swiftly as possible after the first recognizable cold symptom appears.

Based on observations of subjects who have commenced holistic vitamin C therapy within an hour of the appearance of cold symptoms, after only eighteen hours of therapy at least 80 percent of the usual cold symptoms had failed to materialize.

After thirty-six hours of holistic vitamin C therapy, almost all cold symptoms should have disappeared.

Assuming that cold symptoms have largely disappeared, on the fourth and fifth days take one 500 mg tablet of vitamin C every three hours. Continue taking a one-gram tuned-release capsule of vitamin C at bedtime; alternatively. If you have not taken a dose of vitamin C in the previous one-and-a-half-hours, you can take an extra 500 mg tablet Even if you do not wake during the night, take only a 500 mg tablet in the morning.

Most people who follow holistic vitamin C therapy, and who take the other essential nutrients listed earlier hit his chapter, find they are free of all cold symptoms by the third day.

However, if cold symptoms do not disappear, continue taking 500 mg of vitamin C every three hours.

Starting either on the fifth day, or when cold symptoms have disappeared, continue to take 400 mg of vitamin C every three hours. (You can make a 400 mg dosage by slicing one fifth off a 500 mg tablet.) Continue this dosage through the end of the sixth day. You can still take a one-gram timed-release capsule at bedtime; or in lieu of that an extra 400 mg tablet, provided over two hours has elapsed since you last took vitamin C. Starting on the seventh day, take 250 mg of vitamin C every three hours. You can still take a one-gram timed-release capsule at bedtime; or in lieu of it, a 250 mg tablet provided over two hours has elapsed since last taking vitamin C.

On the twelfth day, you can resume your regular prophylactic dose of 250 mg three times a day.

To achieve results, holistic vitamin C therapy must be started within twenty-four hours of the first appearance of cold symptoms. If more than twenty-four hours have elapsed, holistic vitamin C therapy will probably be only fifty percent effective. If forty-eight hours have elapsed, it’s too late.

The idea is to maintain a constant level of vitamin C in the bloodstream. When cold symptoms have disappeared, you can begin to taper off the dosage until by the twelfth day, you are back to your prophylactic dosage of 250 mg three times a day.

Whereas hayfever is a reaction to an airborne allergen occurring in the eyes, nose and throat, asthma is a reaction to an airborne allergen occurring in the lungs and chest. Asthma can range from mild to life-threatening and is frequently precipitated by airborne pollen, seeds, pollutants or chemicals. It may also be triggered by emotional stress, infections and by vigorous outdoor exercise in cold weather. It is a common occupational disease among farmers, meat wrappers, bakers, cotton textile workers and others exposed to chemicals. Most of all, it is a disease of childhood and gradually disappears with advancing age.

The underlying cause of asthma is an exaggerated immune response to an airborne allergen and is identical to that just described under “Allergic Rhinitis.”

The result is that when airways to the lungs are semi-five to an allergen, smooth muscles in the bronchial walls contract and constrict access of air to the lungs. Breathing difficulty results. Besides a tightness in the chest, and a shortness of breath, asthma symptoms often include a wheezing, unproductive cough. Attacks are sporadic and severity vanes widely from one attack to the next. Severe attacks may cause breathing difficulties so intense that the lips turn blue, the pulse beats rapidly and the person sweats with anxiety.

Overall, asthma can range in severity from relatively mild cases which require no lifestyle restriction to life-endangering attacks which restrict many of the activities a person may engage in. Asthma often seems to run in families and sufferers are also often plagued by eczema or hayfever.

Although asthma is not medically curable, it can be relieved by OTC and prescription prophylactics, bronchodilators or steroid drugs. Since these drugs are stronger than those used to treat colds or flu, both OTC and prescription drugs are best taken under the guidance of a physician.

Much can be done to permanently relieve asthma by staying indoors during the pollen season and by removing the source of other offending allergens such as animal danders, hairs, feathers and household dust. Since asthma is basically caused by an exaggerated immune response, the one best way to overcome it permanently is to adopt the therapies for bolstering immunocompetence.

As in every other area of health and healing, a holistic approach is the only system that really works. For example, permanent weight loss is extremely difficult to achieve through dieting alone. Not until exercise and stress management are added, does a diet really begin to work. Likewise, exercise alone will do little to lower cholesterol levels and prevent heart disease until a low-fat diet and a stress management program are added.

In the entire health field, there are remarkably few magic bullets: no anti-aging pill that really works, and very few foods or nutrients that, singly and alone, produce dramatic results.

For a cold therapy to really work, it must work on all levels: on the nutritional, physical, psychological and even the spiritual levels simultaneously. You can begin to practice a step-by-step holistic cold-therapy.

In the entire field of holistic healing, the key to success is acquiring the necessary know-how. To treat your cold successfully, you must know everything there is to know about the cold process and how to deal with it.

You can acquire the know-how you need in the least possible time

Only in recent years have some headache clinics begun to confront the root cause of all headaches, and to stop headaches where they begin, namely in our belief systems. Most appropriately called cognitive positivism, this powerful form of behavioral medicine emerged from recent discoveries in immunity research. It was found that the largest single influence on our health and well-being consists of our emotions.

When our emotions are positive, we are able to enter a state of relaxation. We feel calm and relaxed and terrific all over. Our immunity soars and we swiftly become twice as resistant to cancer and all infections. Our arteries relax, our blood pressure drops, and we become virtually immune to heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and all the other chronic diseases that kill and plague Americans. At the same time, we become almost equally immune to all types of headaches.

When our emotions are negative, we enter the opposite state. We become prone to cancer and infections, our blood pressure rises, and we become increasingly at risk for every type of disease and dysfunction. At the same time, our susceptibility to all types of headaches begins to soar.

The actual process by which inappropriate conditioned beliefs are translated into physiological diseases and into headaches.
